U-17 World Cup: Golden Eaglets Set For Netherlands Challenge

Five-time world champions, the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria have been tipped as favourites when they confront Netherlands in Tuesday’s Round of 16 clashes at the FIFA U17 World Cup finals in Brazil.

The Golden Eaglets topped their Group B table after winning two matches (defeated Hungary 4-2 and Ecuador 3-2) and losing one (1-2 to Australia). Victories over Hungary and Ecuador were obtained at the Estadio Olimpico while the loss to Australia was in Brasilia.

Now, the Nigerian youngsters are back at the familiar surroundings of Estadio Olimpico and are determined to go all out for victory against the Dutch on Tuesday night.

Nigeria forward Ibrahim Sa’id is the only player to have scored a hat-trick at the tournament, and team captain Samson Tijani has also weighed in with two goals – both against Hungary in a tough-as-nails opener. Olakunle Olusegun, Akinkunmi Amoo, and Wisdom Ubani are yet to be among the goals and look forward to the game against the Dutch to make their mark.

Head Coach Manu Garba told the world media in Brazil that the will to win is part of Nigeria’s DNA, and the Class of 2019 is no exception. However, his Eaglets must overcome the disappointment of the unexpected loss to Australia in their final group game, and seize the encounter with the Dutch by the scruff rather than wait for any comeback performance.

“We will look to have the initiative from the beginning against the Netherlands. This is the knockout stage and falling behind at any stage could be tricky,” admitted captain Tijani.

The match will kick-off at 8pm Brazil time (midnight in Nigeria).

China rolls out world's biggest 5G network

Three state-owned carriers revealed their 5G data plans this week What just happened? China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom have launched 5G services across 50 cities in the country including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Huawei, blacklisted by the US, reportedly played a major role in China's 5G rollout. The launch of the network was initially planned for next year but got pulled ahead of schedule by the state-owned carriers. 5G networks have rolled out in several parts of the western world, but China's roll-out of the technology on Friday is reportedly the world's largest (yet). Prices of 5G plans by all three state-run telecom operators start at around $18 / month (30GB /500 call minutes) and scale up to $85 / month (300GB / 3,000 call minutes), which some experts say are potentially still too high for widescale adoption, given China's per-capita income. Reportedly, download speeds will also vary according to data plans. Subscribers o...
