UEFA Fines United, Warns Mourinho Over Late Valencia Kick-Off

Manchester United have been fined a total of 15,000 euros (£13,200) by UEFA for the late kick-off to their Champions League match against Valencia earlier this month caused by the hosts being caught in traffic. UEFA’s disciplinary arm fined United 5,000 euros for the late arrival of the team bus, and a further 10,000 euros for the late kick-off, while United manager Jose Mourinho was also warned over the delay. United arrived at Old Trafford less than 45 minutes before kick-off on October 2 and had to ask Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic to delay the start of the game by five minutes. Mourinho blamed the delay on local police for not providing an escort for United’s team bus, but police officials said the club knew well ahead of time no such service would be provided and had time to make the adequate arrangements. “We left the hotel at six o’clock, hoping that 30 minutes would be enough, which normally it is, but this time the police refused to do...

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks during the annual F8 summit at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California on May 1, 2018.

British former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, a leading anti-Brexit advocate, said on Friday he would be starting a job at Facebook, as the US giant faces up to regulatory pressures. “I am delighted to be joining Facebook. After almost 20 years in European and British politics, this is an exciting new adventure for me,” Clegg wrote on his Facebook page. Clegg said Facebook was “at the heart of some of the most complex and difficult questions we face” such as “privacy of the individual”, “integrity of our democratic process”, and “the balance between free speech and prohibited content”. “I believe that Facebook must continue to play a role in finding answers to those questions — not by acting alone in Silicon Valley, but by working with people, organizations, governments and regulators around the world to ensure that technology is a force for good. “I am looking forward to being part of this endeavor,” he said. The Press Association news agency and the Financial Times said C...

Nurmagomedov Fight Will Happen Says by Mayweather

Former world welterweight boxing champion Floyd Mayweather insisted Wednesday he plans to fight mixed martial arts star Khabib Nurmagomedov following the Russian’s victory over Conor McGregor. In comments to the TMZ Sports website, Mayweather was adamant that a fight with Nurmagomedov was “happening” provided it took place in the boxing ring. Asked by a TMZ if a fight with Nurmagomedov would take place, the 41-year-old replied: “Oh, we’re fighting.” “I’m my own boss. I can’t say what’s going on on Khabib’s end, but on my end, we can make it happen,” Mayweather said. Mayweather, who came out of retirement to defeat McGregor in a money-spinning fight in Las Vegas last year, stressed though that any fight with Nurmagomedov would take place under boxing rules. “Who’s the A-side? He called me out, so he has to come to my world,” Mayweather said. Mayweather, who boasts a perfect 50-0 record and the unbeaten Nurmagomedov (27-0) would be certain to gener...

China rolls out world's biggest 5G network

Three state-owned carriers revealed their 5G data plans this week What just happened? China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom have launched 5G services across 50 cities in the country including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Huawei, blacklisted by the US, reportedly played a major role in China's 5G rollout. The launch of the network was initially planned for next year but got pulled ahead of schedule by the state-owned carriers. 5G networks have rolled out in several parts of the western world, but China's roll-out of the technology on Friday is reportedly the world's largest (yet). Prices of 5G plans by all three state-run telecom operators start at around $18 / month (30GB /500 call minutes) and scale up to $85 / month (300GB / 3,000 call minutes), which some experts say are potentially still too high for widescale adoption, given China's per-capita income. Reportedly, download speeds will also vary according to data plans. Subscribers o...
